Stories are everywhere
I WANT THIS COURSE TO CHANGE WHAT YOU NOTICE
Storytelling Insights is a self-paced course built from my original conversations with writers, artists, educators, researchers and storytellers. It is designed to give you a lens for noticing the stories already shaping you, the people around you and the world around you.
Story is not only something we tell
We tend to think of storytelling as something other people do. Novelists. Filmmakers. Podcasters. People with a stage or a manuscript.
But long before any of that, story is how we make sense of a Tuesday. How we explain a decision to ourselves after we’ve already made it. How a family keeps returning to the same three anecdotes at every gathering, each time sanding them a little smoother. How a country decides which parts of its past to teach and which to leave out.
Story isn’t a genre. It’s a way human beings organise memory, identity, and meaning. It’s already running, in you, around you, whether or not you ever write a word.
Storytelling Insights isn’t about becoming a better storyteller in the conventional sense. It’s about learning to notice the stories that are already at work.
What a storytelling lens actually means
A storytelling lens is a way of paying attention. Once you have it, you start to notice things you’d otherwise walk past:
The story a colleague tells about themselves that quietly limits what they’ll try next.
The story your family carries about “the kind of people we are,” and how much of your life has been shaped around it.
The story a brand or a leader is using to earn your trust, and whether it earns it honestly.
The story you haven’t examined in years, still running quietly underneath a decision you’re about to make.
None of this requires you to write anything. It requires you to look differently at what’s already there.
What you may be noticing
Learners who go through this course often start to notice:
Where their own life story has calcified into a single interpretation — and where it hasn’t.
How the people close to them explain themselves, and what that reveals.
How culture, memory and identity are carried forward, generation to generation, mostly through story.
How suspense, character and craft aren’t just tools for fiction, they’re patterns of attention that show up in ordinary conversation.
The course journey
The main topics
Everyone’s a Storyteller

How uncertainty and anticipation are built, deliberately or not.
Characters That Feel Real
What makes a person — real or written — believable.
The Long Story
Meaning and continuity across a whole life, not just a single narrative.
Living Stories
Story as something lived, not only told.
Epilogue: The Wall of Life
A closing reflection on what story or wisdom you might ultimately want to leave behind.
How the course works
Each lesson combines:
A short AI-assisted digital guide (created using Synthesia) that introduces the idea
An excerpt from one of my original conversations with a contributor
A reflective summary
A practical exercise
Optional further learning for anyone who wants to go deeper
Note: The digital guide segments are AI-assisted. The substance, the conversations, the curation and the through-line are mine and come from my work.
What makes it unique
This isn’t a writing course dressed up as a self-discovery course, or the reverse. It’s built specifically around developing a way of noticing, using storytelling as the lens, not the end goal.
It’s grounded in real conversations with people who think about story professionally and personally: writers, researchers, educators, artists. Those conversations come from my own public podcast. What this course offers is what sits around them: my own perspective and framing, built from years of experience, curated into a single throughline that connects the key topics into one coherent reflection and learning journey.
Who this is for
Reflective adults interested in identity, meaning, ancestry, culture and human experience
Professionals who want clearer, more authentic communication
Writers and creative people wanting sharper observation and emotional truth
Anyone curious about how stories shape themselves, other people and society
What this course is not
Advanced writing or screenwriting instruction
A corporate leadership programme
A career-transition or public-speaking course
Therapy or clinical support
If you’re looking for any of the above, this probably isn’t the right course for you. I’d rather tell you that now than after you’ve bought it.
Why I made this
Two conversations in particular stayed with me longer than the rest.
One was with one of Denmark’s better-known storytellers, who worked with children in hospital, helping them heal through storytelling. Not by distracting them from what they’re going through, but by giving them a way to make sense of it. Hearing him describe that stopped me. I hadn’t thought of story as something that could function almost as medicine.
The other was with an academic and philosopher, the founder of Narrative Infrastructure, on the way Aboriginal peoples in Australia used songlines to navigate vast distances. The songs weren’t decoration. They were, in effect, stories encoding an entire map of the country. A song was how you found your way home.
Curating these conversations into one course, something shifted that I hadn’t expected going in. I’ve spent years working from a Buddhist lens, one that holds that at the deepest level, we are not the stories we tell about ourselves. I still believe that. But sitting with practitioner after practitioner who works with story in such different worlds, hospitals, deserts, classrooms, I came to see the relative level differently. At that level, in the world we actually live and act within, story isn’t decoration either. It’s structural. It’s how a child makes sense of an illness, how a people finds its way across a continent, how any of us make sense of a random Tuesday.
Storytelling Insights sits inside that tension, on purpose. Story isn’t who we ultimately are. But it’s how we live, in the meantime.

What you may take away
By the end, my hope isn’t that you’ve simply learned facts about storytelling. It’s that you’ve started to see differently — noticing the stories in your own life, in the people around you, and in the wider world, with more clarity than before.

Final invitation
Storytelling didn’t start with the first novel or the first film. It started with the first person trying to make sense of something that happened to them, and finding a way to pass it on.
My hope is not simply that you learn more about storytelling, but that you begin to see more through it.
